Oh no, I am nowhere near ‘there’ yet, and probably will never get to that almost mythical place that is the ‘there’ we yearn to reach!
Travelling the path to mega riches, yearning to write a piece that goes ‘viral’ and sets you up for life? Or at least pays the rent for the month?
How many of us here on this platform and others are on that path, writing our articles, reading the articles of others, commenting, connecting, and hoping, all of us, to ‘get there’?
I’ve been on this platform, Medium, since I think April this year, and I really enjoyed writing my little bits of this and that, getting some attention from others, some people I knew, some strangers … It was fun.
But hey, I have a life too, outside of the online world. I’m a wife, a mother, a dog owner, and the President of a writing group that meets every week. I have work to do, real work!
And no, I am absolutely not there yet, and to be honest, I don’t even really want to be there. I have the books I’ve written, to bring me to the world’s attention, if that is what I want, and I have the things my writing group is doing, that I am incredibly proud of.
I created this writing group, a small band of writers, in a variety of different genres, and we have a great time getting together and doing our writing things …
So in terms of being a writer, connected to my community, and other writers in my region, I am definitely ‘there’ and I love that people around where I live know me as a writer, even if they’re not personally into this ‘writing’ community I inhabit.
And to tell you the truth, the more personal, person to person meeting up with others feels more real to me, and while I would love to have a huge online audience, it isn’t the most important thing, not now, not ever.
So I’ll drop in here on Medium every now and then, perhaps, and be happy enough with whatever amounts of money that may get into my bank account, but I will probably always make a lot more money selling my actual books.
I had a book launch recently, and there were real live people there, happy to be there with me, and we had a fabulous time together. And I made a lot more money doing that than I’ve ever made online.
But we’re all different, and finding the way that works best for us, is the way we all have to go, to live the writing life that suits us. One person’s book launch with lots of people is another person’s nightmare.
Some people much prefer being online to in person, but for me, real life connection wins, hands down. That’s the way life is, we’re different, and that is a fine thing, viva la differnce!
