My Neurologist told Me, Use It Or Lose It

He’d just told me the reason for my inability ot walk properly, and muscled weakness was that I actually had Multiple Sclerosis …

The book I wrote & published the year after diagnosis, holding Mick the Stick, and Jane the Cane

So, I had Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and if I didn’t walk regularly, I may well quickly lose my ability to walk, my mobility. This is the ‘It’ my neurologist was talking about. I like being able to get around the place, so I walked, at least a bit more, and so still have my mobility.

There is lots of information available about the importance of exercising, for people with MS. This is different from what people were told twenty years ago, for sure, when rest was recommended for those suffering with this disease.

But they knew far less about what MS is and does to the body back then, and far more now. And there are far better treatments these days, and I’m certainly benefitting from that, happily having a tablet of Gilenya, every morning, so I can keep moving!

I’m also on a bit of an exercise program at the moment too, that involves keep track of how many ‘Extra Steps’ I walk every day (or so). I have my cell phone pedometer at the ready, so when I decide to start these steps, I pop my phone in my pocket and get walking!

When I was first diagnosed with MS, walking 50 metres was, but my neurologist put me on a medication, that involved injecting it…
