New Greyhound, Not Quite So Great Times

At the beginning, things were understandably tense, bringing a new dog into our household, and an adult canine, not a puppy, we knew ot may be troublesome at times. But things went along well enough, and my husband and I felt our way through this new relationship with Lenny, a retired racing Greyhound.

We were beginning to love this big black dog, and felt he was becoming to love us. But then, things changed, Lenny growled at me a few times, and from my knowledge about all of the dogs I’ve had before, being growled at was a bad thing!

There was only growling though, no being snapped at or bitten, so we persevered. I did some research on reputable sites on the internet, and learnt some interesting things, things that made me a bit more comfortable with having been growled at by Lenny, but more importantly, now understanding the reason for his behavior.

Lenny had come from being a racing Greyhound in November last year, living in racing kennels with other Greyhounds, to being a pet dog, with some training in what that entailed, but not a lot, given the time available for it. We got Lenny in February this year, so really, I feel we’ve done a good job, and Lenny has too, in having him understand some of our rules.

Rule one, inside of the house is not a toilet for dogs! There were some mistakes that happened early in our life with Lenny, but these days, Lenny knows ‘going to the toilet’ happens outside, never inside! And we’re careful to keep an eye on our new dog, and…
